Location
Curated places
Pendry Chicago
Stay · 720 min · ───
The Carbide & Carbon Building (1929), a black-and-gold ziggurat on Michigan Avenue — the rumor that it resembles a champagne bottle has stuck. The conversion preserves the lobby's terrazzo and bronze, suites added to the upper floors. Walk to the Art Institute in eight minutes, the lakefront in twelve.
Lula Cafe
Food · 90 min · ──
A Logan Square corner since 1999 — coffee and breakfast through lunch, rotating dinner. Monday's Farm Dinner is a prix fixe written from that week's farm deliveries. Walk-up works for lunch; dinner you reserve a week out. Take the Blue Line to California, three blocks south.
Art Institute of Chicago
Sight · 240 min · ──
The McKim Building (1893) plus the Renzo Piano Modern Wing (2009). The Impressionist collection is the deep one — Caillebotte's Paris Street, Seurat's Sunday Afternoon, and Hopper's Nighthawks all in adjacent rooms. Three hours is rushed; four reasonable. Bring a sketchbook; the European galleries reward sketching.
Chicago Architecture River Cruise
Activity · 90 min · ──
The Chicago Architecture Center's docent-led boat — ninety minutes through the Loop's river corridor, fifty-plus buildings narrated by foundation volunteers. Departs Michigan Avenue Bridge dock multiple times daily. Middle of the boat in the open section is the seat; enclosed front and back trade view for AC.
