Curated places
South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point
Trail · 120 min · Free
A short steep descent from the rim — 1.8 miles round-trip, 600 feet down, no shade, no water on trail. The point gives one of the canyon's clearest views without committing to a full descent. Start at dawn in July; the trail is dangerous in afternoon storms. Return is harder than the descent.
Desert View Watchtower
Sight · 90 min · Free
Mary Colter's 1932 stone tower at the east end of Desert View Drive — twenty-three miles from the village, the longest view in the park, the Colorado River visible in the gorge below. The interior walls are Hopi artist Fred Kabotie's murals; the spiral staircase climbs four levels. Late July afternoon gets canyon color and monsoon storms above it both.
El Tovar Hotel
Stay · 720 min · ───
The 1905 Charles Whittlesey lodge on the South Rim — Norwegian-Swiss timber and stone, listed NHL. Seventy-eight rooms, the rim-facing ones expensive and worth it. Reserve thirteen months out for July; the dining room books a few weeks ahead. The Mary Colter buildings — Bright Angel, Hopi House — are next door.
